You don't usually see me in front of the camera, but this was a special occasion. I've been producing content for ALTERNATE aTTaX for years now and after signing on full-time, we started amassing footage like never before. Our sponsor SEAGATE graciously provided a stack of hard disks to help us transfer all of our data into a safe environment.
With my degree in Computer Science and years of building computers for myself, friends, and family, we decided to completely DIY our entire server backend. We built a prosumer-grade computer, plugged in the hard drives and ran ProxMox virtualization on it. The drives are structured as a RAIDZ1 array, meaning that we retained approx. 3/4 of storage space with a 1-drive redundancy. We could have gone for TrueNAS, but opted for handing ZFS on the host system and serving the storage via an OpenMediaVault VM instead. On a separate VM, we're running Nextcloud with plenty of resources to enable all sorts of cool features. Most crucially, we now have a public-facing cloud to share productions and files with organizers, sponsors, and players. All of our footage is full accessible at all times of day and from anywhere in the world - a massive, massive increase of productivity for us.
